Actually, far from defending the guy, but both are powered by electricity, so the real factor for the carbon footprint here, is how you produce it, have a great nuclear program backed by renewable to slowly transition, and you are indeed good in both cases, produce electricity with coal and fuel (the Trump/chinese way) then you won't reduce the carbon footprint with a tesla.

When you dont understand bitcoin... (1) You can wrap bitcoin under defi to trade it using proof-of-stake (its cheaper and environmental friendly), this is rising because if you dont use much electricity you can provide more transactions for cheaper price; (2) When you trade it inside an exchange you arent using the blockchain network (so no energy spent, no reward for miners); (3) Even in proof-of-work transactions the amount you trade (1000 BTC or 0.1 BTC) is irrelevant to the network, so by getting bitcoins out of the market he is actually reducing the transactions -> saving energy in the proof-of-work network. Because BTCs price is rising you could argue nevertheless more miners are getting into it to get a share, but again (arg. 1), this is why defi is rising. The beauty of BTC is that you can trade it in any way you want.

You have to understand that the ATM system, Mastercard/Visa servers and others are eating A LOT more energy. Don't be static illiterate. Also, this energy is used not only to transfer the information in the network but also to secure the network. The more miners and participants, the more secure network it is. I think it is a ok price to pay in order to create monetary network. Instead of like Instagram - powering double taps and ridiculous stories.
